Which pillow size is right for you?
For a successful interior, not only colors and haptics, but also the right proportions play an important role. Not only the design of the cushions and the selection of suitable fabrics, but also the right interplay of cushion sizes is important when choosing your new sofa cushions. I am always asked what cushion sizes I would recommend for which sofa and design. Discover here some valuable tips and tricks on how to harmoniously combine sofa cushions of different sizes.
Your Cushion Size Guide – Orientation Made Easy
I know how difficult it is to imagine the proportions solely by the measurements listed next to my products. So, for those who cannot personally visit my atelier and shop in Berlin to see cushion sizes and fabrics on site, I'm providing a small cushion size guide here. This will make it easier for you to get an overview of the standard sizes I offer. I'll also give you a few tips for putting together your perfect cushion ensemble. Have fun with this cozy and stylish cushion tetris.

5 Tips for the Perfect Cushion Combination
Tip 1 – Bigger is Better
If you're torn between two sizes, I recommend choosing the larger one. Cushions may seem quite large in isolation, but once placed on a sofa, armchair, or bed, they immediately appear a bit smaller in comparison.
Tip 2 – Size Mix
For a harmonious mix of cushion sizes, it's less about the width and more about the height of the cushions. To arrange the cushions beautifully in front of each other and create a lovely interplay of different color areas, I recommend cushions with height differences of 10 to 20 cm. Depending on the size of your cushions, differences of 10 or 20cm are better suited. Here's an example: If the largest cushion, leaning closest to the back of the sofa, is for instance 60cm high, then it looks harmonious if the two cushions staggered in front of it are 50cm and 40cm high. If you start with a 70cm high cushion, then the next two cushions would ideally be 50cm and 30cm high. I also always find it nice to mix square and rectangular cushions and pay attention to different heights and widths of the cushions.
Tip 3 – Cushion Size & Design
The typical HETTI. design, featuring two to three different fabrics, comes in three distinct design principles. For cushions based on the golden ratio, I prefer rectangular formats and therefore only offer them in these. I find it more harmonious when the combination of two fabrics is applied to an elongated horizontal shape. However, if you would like to combine the two fabrics in a square, I am of course happy to do that too. Just write to me.
Here you can learn more about the three HETTI. design principles.
Tip 4 – The Right Number of Cushions
I always recommend choosing an odd number of cushions. I can't scientifically explain why, but I always find it more harmonious than an even number. For example, if you place two cushions in the left and two in the right corner of a sofa for two to three people, it looks more dynamic and lively if a small fifth cushion is placed in the middle. This cushion often ends up being moved around more, perhaps placed as support for the neck or back.
Tip 5 – Cushion Stacks & Floor Cushions
I loooove floor cushions and my designs are perfect not only for "setting them up" conventionally, like on a sofa, but also for stacking them. This way, you can see all the fabrics and the contrasting zippers at first glance. This technique creates exciting, soft, and cuddly sculptures. Cushions of different widths are particularly suitable for a beautiful cushion stack. It is best if the cushions differ by 10cm in width.
Notes on the correct cushion size and filling
Measurements ≠ actual size
The dimensions of my cushions are given in cm and correspond to common standard sizes. This measures width and height from one seam of the cover to the other. This means that the covers only have the specified dimensions when unfilled and flat. When filled with a feather cushion, the cover bulges and thus appears smaller. Since the feather cushions I offer are particularly firmly stuffed to ensure the cushions are nice and plump, this effect is particularly pronounced. Therefore, I would always advise you to choose slightly larger cushions.
Vegan alternatives to feather cushions
Normally, my cushion inserts are filled with feathers, produced by a small family business according to German and EU standards. I prefer feather cushions as I find them to be the most aesthetically pleasing and durable. However, vegan fillings are also possible at any time. Feel free to contact me here .
Custom size? No problem.
Among the standard sizes, none was suitable for you? Do you need a seat cushion that fits your new bench exactly? No problem. I can make any cover and any cushion insert in your desired size. Just write to me and we will find the cushion size that exactly fits your needs.
Conclusion – Your personal cushion ensemble
The right combination of cushion sizes brings calm, structure, and personality to any room. A balanced ensemble of different formats appears lively without being restless.
Ultimately, however, the perfect cushion size is always the one that suits you, your home, and your style. Whether large, small, square, or rectangular – what matters is that you feel comfortable with it and that your sofa or bed becomes your very own personal place of well-being.
All HETTI. cushions are filled with high-quality feather inserts and covered with soft, natural fabrics – for durable quality and timeless design.
